A Shopify store has two costs: the build and the monthly running cost. A build runs from a few hundred dollars for a theme set up with your products to $20,000 or more for a large custom store. What are the costs of a Shopify store?
Every Shopify store has a one time cost to design and set it up, and a running cost to keep it selling. Quotes usually cover the first. The second decides your margin every month.
The build is paid to whoever makes the store. The running cost is paid to Shopify and to the apps you install: the monthly plan, a fee on each card payment and app subscriptions.
What does it cost to have a Shopify store built?
The build price depends on the catalogue and how much of the design is custom. As a rough guide, based on the quotes clients show us:
- A theme set up with your products: free if you do it yourself, about $300 to $1,500 from a freelancer
- A custom designed store with up to 50 products: about $450 to $5,000
- A custom store with hundreds of products, several markets and custom sections: about $5,000 to $20,000
- A headless or fully custom store on Shopify: $20,000 and up
What does Shopify charge each month?
Shopify sells three main plans, Basic, Grow and Advanced, plus Shopify Plus for large brands. Shopify sets the price by country and shows it in your local currency, so check the pricing page for your country before you plan the budget. Yearly billing costs less than monthly.
On top of the plan, every card payment carries a fee. It drops on the higher plans, and an extra fee applies when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments. For most new stores Basic is enough. Move up when the savings on card fees pay for the higher plan.
How much do Shopify apps cost?
Apps are where running costs creep up. Reviews, subscriptions, bundles, wishlists and email tools each charge their own monthly fee, and five or six apps can cost more than the Shopify plan itself.
Many of them do something the theme can do with a little custom code. Ask your developer which apps are needed and which could be built once into the store.
What moves the build price up?
- Catalogue size and variants: every product type needs its own page layout and filters
- Markets: each country can need its own currency, language, tax and shipping rules
- Custom features: bundles, made to order products, quotes or subscriptions
- Moving from another platform: products, customers, orders and redirects all move across
- Content: whether you supply the photos and product copy, or they are written and sourced for you
