The short answer

Before you hire a Shopify developer, ask eight questions: can I see live stores you built, is the price fixed, what does it include, custom theme or reshaped theme, which paid apps will I need, who owns the store and the code, how will you move my products and rankings, and what happens after launch. The answers show who will cost less in the end.

What should you ask?

  • Can I see live stores you built, and talk to one of those clients?
  • Is the price fixed, and what exactly does it include?
  • Will you build a custom theme or reshape an existing one, and why?
  • Which paid apps will the store need, and what will they cost each month?
  • Will the store, the theme code and every account be in my name?
  • If I am moving from another platform, how will you move products, customers, orders and redirects?
  • How will you check the store on phones and test the checkout before launch?
  • What support is included after launch, and what does it cost after that?

Which answers are warning signs?

  • No live stores to show, only screenshots
  • An hourly price with no estimate of total hours
  • A long list of paid apps for features a theme can handle
  • The store or the theme set up in the developer's own account
